How we teach Geography

At Callands, we teach our children to know, apply and understand the skills and processes specified in the Geography programme of study within the National Curriculum. We believe that geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Three units of work are taught in each year group across the school year allowing children to explore local and diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. We aim for children to develop a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. 
 
We use a combination of field work, maps, atlases, globes and computer mapping to explore the local area, the united Kingdom, Europe and the wider world.

What your child will learn

Our teaching equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. As pupils progress through the school, their growing knowledge about the world helps them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes. 

Children are taught to communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills. We seek to inspire curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, providing our children with the essential knowledge needed in order for them to develop their roles and responsibilities as global citizens.
